Vertical Layer

There’s everything in this modern Japanese bookshelf that takes its cue from Japanese architecture: symmetry, repetition, rhythm, balance and proportions. Based on these elements, Time&Style created Vertical Layer, a Japanese-inspired library with a linear design that carefully combines vertical and horizontal panels. The shelf sizes are based on the shakkanhō, a traditional Japanese system of measurement grounded in body size. In Japan, the shakkanhō system is still widely used for units of measurement in architecture and in other aspects of everyday life, including ‘sun’ and ‘shaku’ for lengths, and ‘tsubo’ and ‘chō’ for surfaces. Vertical Layer, which is inspired by a graceful skyscraper, literally emphasises the vertical panels due to the recessed horizontal shelves.
